چکیده

The Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe (BCM) rule is one of the best-established learning formalisms for neural tissue. However, as it is based on pulse rates, it can not account for recent spike-based experimental protocols that have led to spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) rules. At the same time, STDP is being challenged by experiments exhibiting more complex timing rules (e.g. triplets) as well as simultaneous rateand timing dependent plasticity. We derive a formulation of the BCM rule which is based on the instantaneous postsynaptic membrane potential as well as the transmission profile of the presynaptic spike. While this rule is neither directly rate nor timing based, it can replicate BCM, conventional STDP and spike triplet experimental data, despite incorporating only two state variables. Moreover, these behaviors can be replicated with the same set of only four free parameters, avoiding the overfitting problem of more involved plasticity rules.

Rate and Pulse Based Plasticity Governed by Local Synaptic State Variables

Classically, action-potential-based learning paradigms such as the Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe (BCM) rule for pulse rates or spike timing-dependent plasticity for pulse pairings have been experimentally demonstrated to evoke long-lasting synaptic weight changes (i.e., plasticity). However, several recent experiments have shown that plasticity also depends on the local dynamics at the synapse, suc...

A critique of BCM behavior verification for STDP-type plasticity models

Rate based (Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe, BCM) and spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) are the two principal learning behaviors found at cortical synapses. Some BCM induction protocols have been shown to be compatible with STDP rules, thus combining both forms of plasticity. However, we demonstrate that the majority of actual experimental BCM protocols cannot be reproduced by STDP. This sensi...

Title : A triplet model of spike - timing dependent plasticity generalizes the BCM rule to spatio - temporal inputs

Synaptic strength depresses for low, and potentiates for high activation of the postsynaptic neuron. This feature is a key property of the well-known Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro (BCM) synaptic rule, which has been shown to maximize the selectivity of the postynaptic neuron, and thereby offers a possible explanation for experience-dependent cortical plasticity such as orientation selectivity. Howev...

Spike timing dependent plasticity: mechanisms, significance, and controversies

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. This idea was purposed by Hebb to provide a basis for the formation of a cell assembly. Repetitive correlated activity of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons can induce long-lasting synaptic strength modification, the direction and extent of whi...

Synaptic plasticity, metaplasticity and BCM theory.

In many regions of the brain, the activity-dependent changes in synaptic strength depend on the frequency and timing of presynaptic stimulation and postsynaptic activity (synaptic plasticity), as well as the history of activity at those synapses (metaplasticity). The Bienenstock, Cooper and Munro (BCM) theory made several assumptions about how synapses modify and these have helped to guide vari...
